Why PM Modi Welcomed Qatar's Emir Sheikh Tamim Personally at the Airport

Prime Minister Narendra Modi broke protocol to personally welcome Qatar's Emir Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al-Thani at the New Delhi airport on Monday, February 17, 2025. The Emir is in India for a two-day state visit focused on strengthening bilateral relations, particularly in trade, investment, and technology.

This marks the Emir's second visit to India, the first being in March 2015. On his arrival, PM Modi took to social media, referring to the Emir as his "brother" and expressing his excitement for the upcoming talks, scheduled for February 18. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar was also present at the airport to greet the visiting dignitary, and a cultural performance was arranged to honor the Emir.

The Emir's visit holds significant diplomatic importance as Qatar and India seek to enhance their partnership. The two leaders are expected to engage in discussions covering areas such as energy, defense cooperation, and cultural ties.

In terms of economic ties, trade between the two nations has grown significantly, with Qatar being India's largest supplier of LNG and LPG. The countries are also keen on exploring collaboration in emerging sectors like fintech and renewable energy.

Qatar’s role in security matters in the region, particularly as a mediator in the Middle East, also makes the visit noteworthy.
