KIIT Suicide Case: Nepal PM Intervenes; Accused Arrested – What We Know So Far
A third-year BTech student from Nepal, Prakriti Lamsal, was found dead in her hostel room at Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT) in Bhubaneswar. Allegations have emerged that she was harassed and blackmailed by a fellow student, Advik Srivastava, a 21-year-old from Lucknow.
Lamsal’s death has sparked widespread protests, diplomatic concerns, and scrutiny of the university’s handling of harassment complaints. Over 500 Nepali students on campus protested, and tensions escalated when university authorities attempted to forcibly evict them. The situation has led to intervention by the Nepalese government and responses from Indian officials.
Allegations Against the Accused
According to reports and complaints from Lamsal’s cousin, Siddhant Sigdel, she had been subjected to continuous harassment by Srivastava, which allegedly contributed to her tragic death. Sigdel's FIR claims that Lamsal had reported Srivastava's behavior to the university's International Relations Office (IRO), but the authorities only issued a warning and failed to take stronger action.
There are also claims that Lamsal was being blackmailed by Srivastava, and an audio clip purportedly featuring a conversation between them went viral, with the male voice allegedly heard abusing and harassing Lamsal.
On the evening of February 16, police arrested Srivastava outside the Biju Patnaik International Airport, where he was reportedly attempting to leave the city. Reports surfaced of a flight ticket from Bhubaneswar to Kolkata dated February 16, which added to suspicions that he was trying to flee after Lamsal's death. Srivastava has been booked under Section 108 of the Indian Penal Code for abetment of suicide, and Lamsal’s mobile phone and laptop have been seized for forensic analysis.

In the wake of Lamsal’s death, Nepali students at KIIT protested by blocking roads and demanding justice. They accused the university of ignoring Lamsal’s complaints and failing to act preventively.
Social media videos showed clashes between students and university security personnel. To manage the situation, the university closed its campus to Nepali students indefinitely on February 17 and ordered them to vacate immediately.
