A life-threatening blood clot sidelined NBA All-Star Victor Wembanyama. Here’s what to know

Victor Wembanyama, the NBA All-Star from the San Antonio Spurs, has been sidelined for the remainder of the 2024-2025 season due to a life-threatening blood clot, the NBA announced Thursday.

The 21-year-old French player, who was named Rookie of the Year last season, is suffering from deep vein thrombosis in his right shoulder. This serious condition occurs when a blood clot forms in a vein deep inside the body.

These clots can break free and travel through the bloodstream, potentially blocking blood flow to critical organs like the brain, heart, or lungs. A clot in the heart could lead to a heart attack, while one in the lungs could cause a pulmonary embolism, a life-threatening condition.

While deep vein thrombosis is most commonly associated with clotting in the legs—often after sitting for long periods or recovering from an injury or surgery—it can also occur in the upper body. Factors like severe muscle injuries, fractures, and major surgeries can increase the risk of thrombosis.

Individuals over the age of 40, as well as those with certain conditions such as cancer, heart disease, lung disease, or autoimmune disorders like lupus, are particularly at risk. Other risk factors include smoking, inherited clotting disorders, obesity, use of birth control or hormone replacement therapy, and a history of deep vein thrombosis.

To diagnose the condition, doctors look for symptoms such as swelling, pain, redness, and warmth in the affected area, with an ultrasound or scans used for confirmation. Blood tests may also be conducted to check for clotting factors.
