Voletta Wallace, the mother of the late rapper Notorious B.I.G. and a steadfast guardian of his legacy, has passed away at 78. She died on Friday while receiving hospice care.

Her family shared the news on Facebook, expressing deep sorrow over her loss. "We have suffered an immense loss today. Our mother, our matriarch, the woman who devoted herself to uplifting her son, Christopher Wallace, and preserving his legacy, has passed away," they wrote. The family asked for privacy as they mourned and thanked friends and supporters for their heartfelt condolences.

The Monroe County coroner confirmed that Wallace passed away from natural causes in Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania.

Her son, the legendary rapper Notorious B.I.G., was tragically murdered in 1997 at the age of 24, just weeks before the release of his seminal album Life After Death. Voletta Wallace dedicated herself to protecting her son's legacy, ensuring his wealth was passed on to his children, Christopher Jordan “C.J.” Wallace and T’yanna Dream Wallace. She and her family also pursued multiple legal actions, including wrongful death and conspiracy lawsuits related to his unresolved murder.

A Jamaican immigrant and single mother, Voletta Wallace worked as a preschool teacher. After her son's death, she made a powerful appearance at the 1997 MTV Video Music Awards, accepting the Best Rap Video award for Biggie's hit “Hypnotize” on his behalf.

Over the years, she partnered with the mothers of other late musicians, including Aaliyah, Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes of TLC, and Jam Master Jay, through the Christopher Wallace Memorial Foundation and its “B.I.G. Night Out” initiative, which provided support to grieving parents in the music industry.

Voletta Wallace also contributed to projects honoring her son's memory, including the 2021 Netflix documentary Biggie: I Got a Story to Tell and serving as a producer on the 2009 biopic Notorious. In 2005, she published a memoir titled Biggie: Voletta Wallace Remembers Her Son, where she shared personal stories, photos, and reflections on the profound loss of her son.

Her enduring love for her son was reflected in all her efforts to honor him, including participating in tributes such as the 50th birthday celebration of Biggie at the Empire State Building. Her legacy endures through the continued celebration of Notorious B.I.G.’s monumental influence on hip-hop and music history.
