Nets Player Grades: Cam Johnson Scores 18 in 110-97 Loss to Cavaliers

Brooklyn, NY – February 20, 2025: The Brooklyn Nets (20-35) entered the All-Star Break with strong defensive performances but faced a tough challenge against the Cleveland Cavaliers (45-10) on Thursday. Despite leading 50-48 at halftime, the Nets couldn't maintain their momentum and lost 110-97. Cam Johnson contributed 18 points and three rebounds, while Keon Johnson added 16 points and four rebounds. However, these efforts weren’t enough to overcome the Cavaliers, who exploded in the second half, taking advantage of second-chance points and transition opportunities.

Here are the player grades for the Nets following their loss to the Cavaliers:

D'Angelo Russell: Incomplete
Russell struggled with his shot, especially from three-point range, despite overcoming previous shooting difficulties before the All-Star Break. Though he had a challenging matchup against Darius Garland and Donovan Mitchell, Russell helped set up teammates without turning the ball over. However, he sprained his right ankle in the third quarter and did not return.

Keon Johnson: B-
Johnson had a strong scoring performance despite his three-point shot not falling. He continues to show improvements in his ability to attack the rim and use his athleticism to score in a variety of ways. His consistency on offense is steadily growing.

Cam Johnson: C+
Johnson had a solid outing, scoring at all levels and showing his ability to drive to the basket. His improvement in attacking the rim has made his outside shooting more effective, as defenders now respect both aspects of his game.

Ziaire Williams: B-
Williams had a respectable game offensively, although his three-point shooting was off. However, he made up for it with strong defensive efforts, especially against Cleveland’s backcourt duo of Garland and Mitchell, where he proved disruptive on the perimeter.

Nic Claxton: C+
Claxton played well overall, though he had difficulty finishing at the rim against Cleveland's interior defenders like Jarrett Allen and Evan Mobley. His touch on mid-range shots has fluctuated, but he contributed solid rebounding and strong defense throughout the game.

Trendon Watford: C+
Watford came off the bench with a strong start, exploiting mismatches against Ty Jerome. However, he struggled with his shooting, particularly when challenged by Allen and Mobley in the paint. Despite this, he did well on the boards but had a rough outing with ball security.

Jalen Wilson: B
Wilson had one of his better shooting performances, especially from three-point range, an area that has been inconsistent for him. He contributed solidly on both ends of the floor, which led to a strong overall performance.

Day'Ron Sharpe: B-
Sharpe was active on both ends, but his finishing at the rim was disappointing, especially given his usual success in this area earlier in the season. While he faced tough matchups in the paint against Allen and Mobley, Sharpe missed opportunities that could have made a difference in the game.

Tyrese Martin: C-
Martin had an efficient shooting game but was mostly a late-game contributor when the Cavaliers had already built a significant lead. After recently signing a multi-year contract, Martin had a decent showing, but his scoring could have been useful earlier in the game to help the Nets remain competitive.

Killian Hayes: C
Hayes, coming off his 10-day contract, showed potential in his backup point guard role with solid passing and defense. However, his shooting was a major drawback in this contest, and he was unable to contribute significantly on the offensive end.
