Lt. Gov. Delbert Hosemann Collapses at Podium, Reported to Be Fine

Lt. Gov. Delbert Hosemann collapsed on Wednesday morning while presiding over the Mississippi Senate. He was later reported to be doing well, though few details about the incident were provided.

Just before 11 a.m., as the Senate was preparing to discuss the final appropriation bills of the day, Hosemann slumped over at his podium and microphone before falling to one side. The Legislature quickly removed a video showing the incident from Senate proceedings.

Medical personnel quickly attended to him, and he was seen sitting upright shortly after the fall, appearing conscious. Hosemann was later seen walking out of the Capitol, escorted by staff and security, and entering a government vehicle, rather than one of the two ambulances stationed outside.

Around noon, a spokeswoman for Hosemann issued a brief update: “Lieutenant Governor Hosemann is doing well and in good spirits. He appreciates all of the medical staff and is eager to return to work.”

After the incident, the Senate cleared the chamber of non-Senators, and the session was recessed until 2 p.m. Senate President Pro Tempore Dean Kirby presided when the session resumed, but no further information about Hosemann’s condition was provided.

Once the Senate adjourned, Kirby said, “Everything’s fine. I think he wanted to come back this afternoon, but I’ll bet he’ll be back tomorrow.”

Before the collapse, Hosemann had briefly stepped out of the Senate chamber to address representatives from the Mississippi Main Street Association, then returned to his podium.

Senate Finance Chairman Josh Harkins, one of Hosemann’s close allies, shared on social media that Hosemann seemed to be doing well. “I appreciate all the calls and text messages concerning Lt. Gov. Hosemann,” Harkins wrote. “When he walked out of the Capitol, he looked at us and said, ‘Hey, that last bill was awful!’ He’s doing well, and if I know him, he’ll be back at the Capitol today.”
