Ex-Proud Boys Leader Enrique Tarrio Arrested for Assault Near US Capitol
Enrique Tarrio, the former national leader of the far-right group Proud Boys, was arrested on Friday near the US Capitol for allegedly assaulting a woman during a protest. The protest was in response to a gathering attended by Tarrio and others who had received presidential pardons for their involvement in the January 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol.
According to Capitol police, officers witnessed Tarrio strike the woman’s cellphone and arm after she held her phone close to his face as they walked near the Capitol. The incident occurred after Tarrio had left a news conference, which had ended "without incident."
The woman told officers that she wished to press charges, leading to Tarrio's arrest for simple assault.
Tarrio, a Miami resident, had previously been sentenced to 22 years in prison—the longest sentence among those charged in connection with the Capitol attack—before being granted clemency by President Trump in January. Trump’s action, which applied to over 1,500 individuals involved in the Capitol attack, was one of his first acts after regaining the White House following his 2020 loss to Joe Biden.
A recent Washington Post/Ipsos poll revealed that Trump's decision to grant clemency to those involved in the Capitol riot was highly unpopular, with more than 80% of respondents disapproving.
Tarrio had been convicted of seditious conspiracy for his role in planning the Capitol attack, which aimed to keep Trump in office despite his electoral defeat. He attended the press conference on Friday with fellow Proud Boys members and Oath Keepers founder Stewart Rhodes, who had also been convicted of seditious conspiracy but was released from prison in January following a commutation of his 18-year sentence by Trump.
