WASHINGTON (AP) — Louis DeJoy, the Postmaster General of the U.S. Postal Service, has announced his decision to step down after nearly five years at the helm. His tenure, which began during the COVID-19 pandemic, was defined by challenges such as a surge in mail-in election ballots and efforts to address financial losses through cost cuts and service changes.

In a letter sent on Monday, DeJoy asked the Postal Service Board of Governors to begin the search for his successor. “As you know, I have worked tirelessly to lead the 640,000 men and women of the Postal Service in accomplishing an extraordinary transformation,” he wrote. “We have served the American people through an unprecedented pandemic and through a period of high inflation and sensationalized politics.”

DeJoy took over as Postmaster General in the summer of 2020, during President Donald Trump’s first term. A Republican donor with a background in logistics, he became the first non-career postal employee to hold the position in nearly two decades.

Under his leadership, DeJoy introduced a 10-year plan to modernize the Postal Service and reduce its financial losses. He had previously warned customers to expect "uncomfortable" rate hikes as the agency sought to stabilize its finances and achieve greater self-sufficiency.

The plan focused on increasing efficiency by consolidating mail processing centers. However, critics, including some members of Congress, argued that these consolidations slowed service, particularly in rural areas. DeJoy defended these moves, telling a U.S. House subcommittee in a tense September hearing that the Postal Service had invested in outdated facilities and made other changes to build a faster and more efficient service for the future.

DeJoy also oversaw the Postal Service during two presidential elections, both of which saw an increase in mail-in voting.

In the lead-up to the 2020 election, a federal judge limited some of DeJoy’s cost-cutting measures after finding they caused delays in mail delivery. DeJoy had restricted overtime for postal workers and stopped the agency’s long-standing practice of allowing late and additional truck deliveries. While these steps reduced costs, they also led to delays in mail delivery.

In his letter, DeJoy emphasized his commitment to facilitating a smooth leadership transition.
