K. Chandrashekar Rao, commonly known by his initials KCR, is an Indian politician who represents the Gajwel Assembly constituency and serves as the leader of the opposition in the Telangana Legislative Assembly. He is the founder and leader of the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS), a state political party in India. KCR played a pivotal role in leading the Telangana Movement and became the first Chief Minister of Telangana, holding office from 2014 to 2023.

Early Life: Born to Raghava Rao and Venkatamma in Chintamadaka village, KCR hails from the Velama caste. He has nine sisters and one older brother. He earned an MA in Telugu literature from Osmania University, Hyderabad.

Political Career:

• Congress Party: KCR began his political career with the Youth Congress in Medak and supported Indira Gandhi during her defeat in the 1977 elections.

• Independent Candidate: In the 1983 Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly elections, KCR contested as an independent in Siddipet but lost.

• Telugu Desam Party (TDP): In 1983, KCR joined TDP and won four consecutive elections in Siddipet from 1985 to 1999. He served as the Minister of Drought & Relief in N. T. Rama Rao’s cabinet and held other positions, including Deputy Speaker of the Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly from 2000 to 2001.

• Formation of Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS): In 2001, KCR left TDP, citing discrimination against the Telangana region. He formed the TRS to demand the creation of a separate Telangana state. In 2004, TRS contested the general elections in alliance with the Indian National Congress, and KCR became an MP.

• Union Cabinet Minister: As part of the United Progressive Alliance, KCR served as the Union Minister for Labour and Employment. He later resigned when Congress appeared unsupportive of Telangana statehood.

• Telangana Statehood Movement: KCR spearheaded the Telangana statehood movement and won the Mahbubnagar Lok Sabha seat in 2009. His hunger strike in 2009 pushed the central government to initiate the process of creating Telangana.

• Chief Minister of Telangana (2014–2023): KCR became the first Chief Minister of Telangana on 2 June 2014 after the state was formed. He was re-elected in 2018. Under his leadership, Telangana witnessed significant development in various sectors, especially in welfare programs aimed at boosting rural economies and community growth. Key initiatives included schemes for affordable housing, pensions for senior citizens, and financial support for farmers.

• Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS): In October 2022, KCR renamed his party to Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) in an attempt to expand his influence beyond Telangana and establish a national political presence.

• Post Chief Minister Role (2024–present): After his defeat in the 2023 Telangana elections, KCR assumed the role of leader of the opposition. He also became more active on social media, joining X (Twitter) and Instagram in April 2024.

Personal Life: KCR is married to Shobha and has two children—K. T. Rama Rao, a legislator, and K. Kavitha, a former MP. His nephew, T. Harish Rao, also serves as a prominent politician. KCR resides at his farmhouse in Erravelli, Medak district. He is proficient in Telugu, English, Urdu, and Hindi.

In 2015, KCR adopted Pratyusha, a girl rescued from domestic violence. She was married in 2020.

In December 2023, KCR suffered a hip fracture after a fall at his farmhouse and was treated at Yashoda Hospitals, Hyderabad. He was discharged after a week of treatment.
