Legendary Penguins Broadcaster Mike Lange Passes Away at 76
Mike Lange, the iconic Pittsburgh Penguins television and radio broadcaster, has passed away at the age of 76, the team confirmed on Wednesday night.
Lange, who retired in 2021 after 46 years of calling Penguins games, was a beloved figure in the hockey world. In 2001, he was awarded the Hockey Hall of Fame's Foster Hewitt Award for excellence in broadcasting.
"Mike Lange was a wordsmith — a magician behind the mic," the Penguins said in a statement. "Although he was originally from California, he quickly became a true Pittsburgher. His vibrant calls and smooth delivery brought Penguins hockey to life."
The Hall of Fame broadcaster’s voice is forever linked to the most memorable moments in franchise history, including all five of the Penguins' Stanley Cup Championships. Lange's distinctive one-liners and ability to predict game-changing plays set him apart from other announcers. His voice made even the greatest hockey legends, such as Mario Lemieux, Jaromir Jagr, Sidney Crosby, and Evgeni Malkin, seem even more magical.
Lange was a part of the Penguins' championships in 1991, 1992, 2009, 2016, and 2017, covering the historic plays of some of the sport's biggest names.
In 2019, the Penguins honored Lange with a pregame ceremony celebrating 45 years as the team’s voice, and the press box at PPG Paints Arena was named the "Mike Lange Media Level."
Lange's career with the NHL began in 1974-75 as the Penguins' radio play-by-play announcer. After a brief departure, he returned in 1976-77, remaining with the team until 2005-06 when he became the TV voice of the Penguins. In 2006-07, Lange went back to calling games on the radio.
A native of Sacramento, California, Lange earned his degree in broadcasting from Sacramento State before starting his career with minor league teams such as the Phoenix Roadrunners and San Diego Gulls, and calling games for the Washington Diplomats soccer team, before joining the Penguins.
Reflecting on his career in 2021, Lange said, "I didn’t get cheated in my quest to do what I have always loved."
Mike Lange’s Famous Quotes Include:
- "Lord Stanley, Lord Stanley, give me the brandy."
- "Scratch my back with a hacksaw."
- "Buy Sam a drink and get his dog one, too."
- "Ladies and gentlemen, Elvis has just left the building."
- "Smilin' like a butcher's dog."
- "He beat him like a rented mule."
