JFK Presidential Library and Museum Closed Amid Trump’s Federal Job Cuts | EXPLAINED
The John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum is closed "until further notice" as President Donald Trump continues to reduce federal jobs, according to a report by WBZ-TV on Tuesday, citing a source.
A message on the library's website states, "The John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum is temporarily closed until further notice," with visitors who were inside being escorted out on Tuesday.
Reports suggest that the library’s chief federal officer was instructed to immediately terminate all probationary employees—those in their first or second year of federal service with fewer job protections. Among those laid off were staff members responsible for keeping the library open to the public and handling private fundraising.
The move follows a similar action taken by the Trump administration over the weekend, where probationary workers at the Federal Aviation Agency were dismissed. President Trump has long vowed to overhaul the federal bureaucracy, calling the federal workforce "bloated" and filled with "unnecessary" personnel, and has fired top-ranking officials at several agencies.
About the JFK Library
The John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum, established in 1979, is located on Columbia Point in Boston's Dorchester neighborhood, adjacent to the University of Massachusetts at Boston. The library typically operates seven days a week and is primarily funded through a mix of admission fees and donations, with some support from federal appropriations for building maintenance and personnel costs.
