James Bond Surprise: Amazon MGM Takes Creative Control of 007 Franchise as Producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson Step Back

In a surprising move that is bound to stir the entertainment world, Amazon MGM Studios has gained creative control of the James Bond franchise. This announcement, made on Thursday, also revealed that long-time producers and stewards of 007, Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli, will be stepping back from their roles.

Under the new terms of this historic agreement, Amazon MGM Studios, along with Wilson and Broccoli, will form a new joint venture to oversee the James Bond intellectual property. While all three parties will remain co-owners of the iconic franchise, Amazon MGM will now lead the creative direction.

Mike Hopkins, head of Prime Video and Amazon MGM Studios, shared, “Since his debut over 60 years ago, James Bond has been one of the most iconic characters in film history. We are grateful to the late Albert R. Broccoli and Harry Saltzman for bringing James Bond to the big screen and to Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli for their dedication to the franchise’s continued legacy. We’re honored to carry this heritage forward and look forward to taking 007 into the next chapter for audiences worldwide.”

Wilson explained, “Having worked on 007 for nearly 60 years, I’m stepping back from producing to focus on art and charitable endeavors. Barbara and I both agree that it’s time for our trusted partner, Amazon MGM Studios, to guide the future of James Bond.”

Broccoli also commented, “My career has been devoted to preserving and expanding the incredible legacy handed down to Michael and me by our father, Cubby Broccoli. I’ve had the privilege of working with four talented actors who portrayed 007 and countless amazing artists throughout my career. With ‘No Time to Die’ marking the end of Michael’s producing journey, I feel it’s time to shift my focus to other projects.”

In 2022, Amazon acquired MGM for $8.5 billion, gaining access to a vast catalog of over 4,000 films, 17,000 TV shows, and the rights to distribute the entire James Bond collection.

Since the release of No Time to Die in 2021, the 25th Bond film and Daniel Craig’s final appearance as 007, there have been no official announcements regarding the next film or the casting of Craig’s successor, despite widespread speculation.
