Earlier that day, Trump continued his controversial rhetoric, once again suggesting that Canada should become the 51st state and inviting "Governor Trudeau" to watch the game with him.
Political tensions have loomed over the 4 Nations tournament, with Canadian fans booing the U.S. anthem during the opening game in Montreal. In Boston on Thursday, Americans retaliated by changing the lyrics of "O Canada" during the anthem performance in response to Trump’s annexation comments.
Online, many Canadians have expressed outrage over the choice of Gretzky as honorary captain. Critics have labeled the move as "tone-deaf," with some questioning Gretzky’s stance on Trump’s statehood rhetoric, particularly after he attended both Trump’s election viewing party in November and his inauguration in January.
