Canada, with Two Panthers, Wins 4 Nations Title in OT; Matthew Tkachuk Injured
Team Canada, featuring Florida Panthers forwards Sam Reinhart and Sam Bennett, triumphed in the 4 Nations Face-Off with a 3-2 overtime win over the United States at TD Garden in Boston on Thursday. Connor McDavid netted the game-winner 8:18 into overtime.
Bennett, a standout physical presence for Canada, tied the game at 2-2 with six minutes remaining in the second period, scoring his first goal of the tournament. Reinhart provided a secondary assist on Nathan MacKinnon’s early goal in the first period. Reinhart finished the tournament with four assists.
Canada’s goaltender, Jordan Binnington, was stellar, stopping 31 of 33 shots faced. For the U.S., Brady Tkachuk and Jake Sanderson scored, while Connor Hellebuyck made 24 saves on 27 shots.
The win was a redemption for Canada, who lost 3-1 to the U.S. in Montreal on Saturday during the round-robin stage. That earlier game saw three fights in the opening seconds, including one involving each Tkachuk brother. This time, however, there were no pre-planned brawls; the stakes were far too high, and the championship game delivered an intense, high-energy spectacle.
The tournament served as an emotional, best-on-best event, offering a perfect lead-up to the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan, which will be the first to feature NHL players since 2014. But before the Olympics, the NHL season resumes, with the Stanley Cup playoffs just under two months away.
Matthew Tkachuk’s Injury
After the tournament, the Florida Panthers are focused on evaluating the severity of Matthew Tkachuk’s lower-body injury, which limited his participation throughout the competition. Tkachuk missed the final 12:36 of the first game against Canada on Saturday and sat out the round-robin finale against Sweden on Monday. In the championship game, he played just 6:47 and finished his final shift with 3:22 left in the second period.
The Panthers, currently leading the Atlantic Division with a 34-20-3 record and looking to defend their Stanley Cup title, will resume regular-season play on Saturday against the Seattle Kraken at Amerant Bank Arena. Panthers head coach Paul Maurice has stated that he will "build some rest" into the schedule for players who participated in the tournament.
In total, the Panthers had a league-high eight players involved in the 4 Nations Face-Off, with Reinhart, Bennett, and Tkachuk representing Canada. Gustav Forsling played for Sweden, while Aleksander Barkov, Anton Lundell, Eetu Luostarinen, and Niko Mikkola represented Finland.
