Donald Trump’s New Executive Order: Only President and AG Can "Interpret US Law"

US President Donald Trump has signed a new executive order asserting that only the President and the Attorney General have the authority to interpret US law. This order prohibits federal regulators and bureaucrats from offering their own interpretations of the law.

"The President and the Attorney General’s opinions on questions of law are controlling on all employees in the conduct of their official duties," the order reads, according to the Washington Times.

This executive order is part of a trio of orders signed by Trump, which also includes an expansion of access to in vitro fertilization (IVF) and a memorandum requiring federal agencies to report waste, fraud, and abuse they uncover and to outline eliminated programs.

White House staff secretary Will Scharf described the order as a move to "reestablish a long-standing norm" in the US, amid concerns from Trump’s critics that he may disregard judicial rulings.

The order emphasizes that agencies like the FDA, EPA, and FCC will no longer be able to impose regulations and fines without sufficient Presidential oversight. It argues that previous administrations allowed "independent regulatory agencies" to operate with minimal supervision from the President, granting them significant executive authority without accountability to the people.

The White House further explained that such "independent agencies" like the FTC, FCC, and SEC have exercised considerable power over American citizens without the oversight of an elected President, issuing rules and regulations that cost billions of dollars and address controversial policy issues without democratic review.

The new order aims to hold all federal agencies, not just Cabinet departments, accountable to the President and, through him, to the American people, as required by the Constitution.
