Tesla Begins Hiring in India Following PM Modi-Elon Musk Meeting in the USA

Tesla Inc. has started recruiting in India, signaling its intent to enter the market after CEO Elon Musk's meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the United States.

Tesla posted job openings for 13 roles, including customer-facing positions and back-end roles, on its LinkedIn page on Monday.

At least five positions, such as service technician and various advisory roles, are available in both Mumbai and Delhi. Other openings, including customer engagement manager and delivery operations specialist, are specifically for Mumbai.

Tesla has been in intermittent discussions with India over the years but had held off on entering the market due to concerns over high import duties. However, India recently reduced the basic customs duty on high-end vehicles priced above $40,000, lowering it from 110% to 70%.

Although India's electric vehicle (EV) market remains small compared to China's, with EV sales in India approaching 100,000 units last year versus China's 11 million, it presents an opportunity for Tesla as the company faces slowing sales globally, marking its first annual decline in EV sales in over a decade.

Tesla's move into India follows a recent meeting between PM Modi, Musk, and former President Donald Trump in Washington. Trump later mentioned that Modi had agreed to begin discussions to address the US trade deficit and increase US military purchases, including steps to eventually supply F-35 fighter jets.

While Musk is a prominent figure in Trump’s cabinet, it remains unclear whether his meeting with Modi was in his capacity as a business leader or his role with the DOGE team. Musk’s involvement in both business and political matters continues to blur the lines between the two. Notably, Italy recently confirmed talks with Musk’s SpaceX to secure a telecommunications deal for its government, following Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni's meeting with then-President-elect Trump in Florida.
