Jerry Butler, The Iceman, Passes Away at 85

Legendary soul singer Jerry Butler, widely known as The Iceman, has passed away at the age of 85. He died at his home in Chicago on February 20, following a prolonged battle with Parkinson’s disease.

Butler’s musical legacy is immense, with over 55 hit songs that profoundly impacted soul music. Some of his most iconic tracks include Only the Strong Survive, Need to Belong, Make It Easy on Yourself, Brand New Me, and Never Give You Up. His powerful voice and emotional storytelling continue to resonate with music lovers across generations.

Born in Missouri, Butler was just three years old when his family, who worked as sharecroppers, moved to Chicago as part of the Great Migration—a time when many African American families sought better opportunities in northern cities.

In the late 1950s, Butler co-founded The Impressions with his childhood friend Curtis Mayfield, whom he met at church. The group gained success, but Butler eventually launched a solo career that secured his place in music history.

Beyond his musical impact, Butler dedicated much of his life to public service. From 1985 to 2018, he served as a commissioner for Cook County, Illinois, where he worked on projects in community welfare and development. As Vice Chair of the Construction Committee and Chair of the Health and Hospitals Committee, he made significant contributions to the region.

In 1991, Butler and The Impressions were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, honoring their lasting influence on the music industry.
