Who is Anthony Ricco? Diddy's Lawyer Withdraws from Sex-Trafficking Case Ahead of Trial
Anthony Ricco, one of the lead attorneys representing rapper Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs in his federal indictment, filed a motion this week to withdraw from the sex trafficking and racketeering case, citing unspecified "sufficient reasons." With the trial set for May 5, 2025, Ricco’s decision comes over three months before the proceedings begin.
Ricco, one of three main lawyers on the case, did not provide further details regarding his request to step down, stating only that there were “sufficient reasons” behind his decision. In a court affidavit filed Thursday in Manhattan federal court, Ricco stated, “Under no circumstances can I continue to effectively serve as counsel for Sean Combs. It is respectfully but regrettably requested that the court grant the relief requested.”
Despite Ricco's withdrawal, he assured the court that the trial would not be delayed, as Combs would continue to be represented by five other attorneys. Ricco's resignation came after discussions with Combs' lead defense attorney, Marc Agnifilo.
Ricco’s request to withdraw has yet to be approved. While the attorney has kept his explanation brief, citing lawyer-client privilege, a judge will need to determine whether the reasons for his withdrawal are valid enough to grant the request.
In his motion, Ricco acknowledged that the court’s local rules require him to provide satisfactory reasons for his withdrawal and emphasized the confidential nature of the details he has not disclosed.
