Gavin Newsom Welcomes President Trump as He Tours Wildfire Damage

Gavin Newsom Welcomes President Trump as He Tours Wildfire Damage

President Donald Trump arrived in Los Angeles on Friday, January 24, to assess the extensive damage caused by the recent wildfires in the area. Upon his arrival, he was greeted by California Governor Gavin Newsom, marking a rare moment of cooperation between the two leaders, who frequently disagree politically. During their meeting, Trump emphasized his desire to address the ongoing crisis, stating, "We want to get the problem fixed."

"We're looking to get something completed, and the way you do that is by working together. He's the governor of the state, and we’re going to get it done," Trump added. "They’re going to need a lot of federal help, and we’re going to take care of things."

Newsom thanked Trump for his support, recalling the federal assistance California received during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“You were there for us during COVID; I don’t forget that. And I have high hopes that we can work together for a speedy recovery,” Newsom told Trump.

Trump's visit to Los Angeles is part of his first presidential trip of his second term, which also included a stop in North Carolina to survey hurricane damage. He was accompanied by his chief of staff, Susie Wiles, national security adviser Mike Waltz, and first lady Melania Trump. The trip comes amid ongoing debates over the responsibilities of federal and state governments in disaster management, with Trump suggesting that states should handle their own issues.

Earlier in the day, Trump criticized California’s response to the wildfires, claiming the fires "could have been put out" and attributing the ongoing crisis to wildlife protection laws that restrict water access. He also hinted at the possibility of withholding federal disaster aid due to disagreements over policies, including voter ID laws and water management.

Additionally, Trump discussed his plans to reform the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), even suggesting the possibility of dismantling the agency.

"I’ll also be signing an executive order to begin the process of fundamentally reforming and overhauling FEMA, or maybe getting rid of it. Frankly, FEMA is not good," Trump said during his North Carolina visit.

Trump has frequently blamed California’s Democratic leadership for the ongoing wildfire crisis, arguing that environmental policies have made the situation worse. Governor Newsom has responded by accusing Trump of spreading misinformation about the state's water policies.

Paul Reubens, Actor Behind Pee-wee Herman, Comes Out as Gay in Posthumous Documentary

Paul Reubens, Actor Behind Pee-wee Herman, Comes Out as Gay in Posthumous Documentary

Paul Reubens, the beloved actor known for his iconic Pee-wee Herman character, has publicly shared his sexuality in the new documentary Pee-wee as Himself.

The documentary, which premiered at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival on January 23, reveals that Reubens had a secret boyfriend, named Guy, from Echo Park, California. In the film, Reubens opens up about his struggles with his sexuality, admitting that he was secretive due to feelings of self-hatred and self-preservation. "I was conflicted about sexuality. But fame was way more complicated," he said.

Reubens sat down for over 40 hours of interviews with director Matt Wolf, where he discussed his personal life, including his experience portraying the beloved character of Pee-wee Herman.

Although Reubens passed away in July 2023 at the age of 70 after a private battle with cancer, he made his intentions for the documentary clear before his death. "More than anything, the reason I wanted to make a documentary was for people to see who I really am and how painful and dreadful it was to be labeled something I wasn’t,” he shared in his final audio recording, made the day before his death. “To be labeled a pariah; to have people be scared of you, or untrusting.”

Reubens reflected on having “many, many secret relationships” throughout his life, noting that his career always took precedence over his love life. However, his Hollywood career took a major hit in 1991 when he was arrested for indecent exposure at an adult movie theater. Although he pleaded no contest to the charge, the incident had a lasting impact on his reputation.

"I kept who I was a secret for a very long time. That really backfired when I got arrested," Reubens said in the documentary. “People had never seen a photo of me other than Pee-wee Herman. And all of a sudden, I had a Charlie Manson mugshot. I lost control of my anonymity. It was devastating."

Decades after the incident, Reubens continued to feel the effects of that moment. "It’s shocking what horrible, awful stuff people think about me,” he shared. “It’s still a significant footnote.”

Ultimately, Reubens wanted his fans to understand his life in a fuller, more honest light. "I was out of the closet, and then I went back in the closet,” he explained. “I wasn’t pursuing the Paul Reubens career, I was pursuing the Pee-wee Herman career.”

Pee-wee as Himself is set to stream on Max later this year.

Shemar Moore Talks Fatherhood: 'I Want to Give Everything to My Baby Girl'

Shemar Moore Talks Fatherhood: 'I Want to Give Everything to My Baby Girl'

Shemar Moore says he’s not planning for more kids, feeling content with his family.

*Shemar Moore opens up about fatherhood, sharing his dedication to his daughter Frankie and confirming he's not expanding his family any further. On The Jennifer Hudson Show, the actor, who is 54, made it clear that he and his girlfriend, Jesiree Dizon, are happy with their 2-year-old daughter, Frankie, as their only child.

“This is real life, I'm gonna keep it 100,” Shemar said. “I’m 54 years old, my home, our home is full.”

Shemar, known for Criminal Minds and S.W.A.T., emphasized that Frankie is not his only responsibility—he’s also a stepdad to Jesiree’s 6-year-old daughter, Charlie, and her 18-year-old son, Kaiden, from previous relationships.

While Shemar is focused on raising his family, he also shared his concerns about how much of his daughter’s life he will be able to witness.

“I was raised an only child,” he said, reflecting on the love and attention he received from his mother. “At 54, honestly, I don't want to worry twice. God willing, I make it to 90, that’s a blessed, full life for me, but that’s 37 years old for Frankie. Full life for me, but maybe gone too soon for her.”

Shemar admitted that fatherhood was something he once thought might never happen for him, but now that he’s made the decision not to have more children, his focus is entirely on being the best dad he can be.

"Whatever time I have left, god willing, I just want to give it all to my baby girl," he said. Reflecting on the time he found out Jesiree was pregnant, he confessed, "I was worried for a while that it was a 'that ship has sailed' kind of thing, but God had my back, and things lined up."

Cowboys Appoint Brian Schottenheimer as New Head Coach

Cowboys Appoint Brian Schottenheimer as New Head Coach

The Dallas Cowboys have found their new head coach, promoting offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer to the position. Schottenheimer, who brings over 25 years of coaching experience, will take the reins of a team that finished with a 7-10 record last season under Mike McCarthy. McCarthy’s contract expired earlier this month after five seasons at the helm.

Schottenheimer, 51, the son of the late NFL coach Marty Schottenheimer, initially joined the Cowboys as a consultant in 2022 before becoming the offensive coordinator for the last two seasons. During that time, McCarthy called the plays after the Cowboys parted ways with former offensive coordinator Kellen Moore in 2023. Schottenheimer was the first known internal candidate to interview for the head coach position, according to sources familiar with the matter.

While several big names were discussed for the job, including former Cowboys players Deion Sanders and Jason Witten, and external candidates like Moore (now with the Philadelphia Eagles), Robert Saleh, and Leslie Frazier, Schottenheimer emerged as the top choice. He has worked closely with quarterback Dak Prescott over the past two seasons, helping to build a strong relationship that will be vital going into Prescott’s first year of his $240 million, four-year contract, which averages $60 million annually.

Schottenheimer has previously served as an offensive coordinator with the New York Jets, St. Louis Rams, and Seattle Seahawks from 2006 to 2020, with a total of 12 seasons calling plays.

In his first year with McCarthy and Schottenheimer, Prescott had one of the best seasons of his career, though the offense struggled early in the following season, even before Prescott’s season-ending hamstring injury. Despite finishing with a losing record, the Cowboys are hoping Schottenheimer’s familiarity and leadership will help guide them back to playoff contention.

United Airlines Passengers and Crew Injured in Emergency Landing

United Airlines Passengers and Crew Injured in Emergency Landing

A United Airlines Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner was forced to make an emergency landing in Lagos, Nigeria, after a critical mid-flight incident that resulted in multiple injuries to passengers and crew members.

Flight UA613, which was en route from Lagos to Washington D.C., had 245 passengers, eight flight attendants, and three pilots onboard. The emergency occurred shortly after the plane took off from Murtala Muhammed International Airport at 23:59 on Thursday, January 23, 2025. The aircraft returned to Lagos at 03:22 the following morning due to a reported loss of pressure.

Upon landing, the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria had rescue teams ready at Gate D31, including Aerodrome Rescue, Fire Fighting Services, and medical teams. The aircraft deboarded at 03:37 without further incident.

The emergency led to serious medical consequences. Four passengers and two crew members suffered serious injuries, while 27 passengers and five crew members experienced minor injuries.

Philadelphia 76ers End Seven-Game Losing Streak with Victory Over Cleveland Cavaliers

Philadelphia 76ers End Seven-Game Losing Streak with Victory Over Cleveland Cavaliers

Paul George and Tyrese Maxey combined for 59 points to lead the Philadelphia 76ers to a much-needed 132-129 win over the Cleveland Cavaliers, ending a seven-game losing streak. George contributed 30 points, including six three-pointers, while Maxey added 29 points to propel the Sixers to a crucial victory.

Philadelphia had been struggling, dropping to a 15-27 record and falling out of playoff contention in the Eastern Conference. Their latest loss, a 144-109 defeat to the Denver Nuggets on Tuesday, had been particularly painful.

"It's a good bounce back," Sixers head coach Nick Nurse said. "Sometimes those games happen," referring to the blowout in Denver. "I didn’t think it was an indication of how we were playing as a team. The players responded, they practiced well yesterday, prepared well tonight, and played really well."

The game was a back-and-forth affair with the lead changing hands 30 times. The Sixers seemed to have sealed the win late in the fourth quarter, going up by eight points after a George layup with 1:26 remaining. However, Cleveland made a push, narrowing the gap to just one point with 12 seconds left following a three-pointer from Ty Jerome. Maxey then iced the game with four clutch free throws.

Target to End DEI Initiatives Following Trump's Executive Order on Diversity Programs Summary

Target to End DEI Initiatives Following Trump's Executive Order on Diversity Programs
Summary:

  • Target joins Amazon, Walmart, and others in scaling back DEI programs
  • Move follows President Trump’s order to end DEI initiatives in federal agencies
  • Target rebrands its "supplier diversity" team as "supplier engagement"

Target announced on Friday that it will end its diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) program this year, marking the latest U.S. corporation to scale back such initiatives amidst growing pressure from conservative groups. The move comes after several large companies, including Walmart, Amazon, and Meta, reduced or eliminated their DEI policies over the past year. Additionally, President Donald Trump recently issued an executive order to federal agencies, mandating the termination of DEI programs and calling on private companies to cease "illegal DEI discrimination and preferences."

While the decision to end DEI initiatives drew considerable backlash, some pointing to Target’s reputation for inclusivity as a key factor in attracting a younger, more diverse customer base, others see it as a misstep. Eric Schiffer, a reputation management expert, described it as "brand suicide" for Target, which has prided itself on inclusivity.

Along with ending its DEI programs, Target will also discontinue its Racial Equity Action and Change (REACH) initiative, which aimed to invest over $2 billion in Black-owned businesses by the end of 2025. This program included efforts to increase the visibility of Black-owned brands, including partnerships with Target’s media arm, Roundel, for paid advertising.

Additionally, the company is renaming its "Supplier Diversity" team to "Supplier Engagement" to better align with its global procurement processes.

Rep. Sylvester Turner, representing Texas’ 18th District, criticized the decision, emphasizing that Target’s highly diverse customer base made ending DEI goals a poor choice.

DEI programs, which aim to provide opportunities for women, ethnic minorities, LGBTQ+ individuals, and other underrepresented groups, became widespread after the 2020 protests against police brutality. However, these programs have been criticized by Trump and conservative factions for allegedly discriminating against other groups and for undermining merit-based hiring and promotion.

In a memo, Target's Chief Community Impact and Equity Officer, Kiera Fernandez, explained that the company’s decision reflects the need to stay in tune with the "evolving" external landscape. The company did not provide additional comments beyond the memo.

According to Target’s 2023 workforce diversity report, 56% of its employees were women, and 56% were people of color. The retailer also made headlines in 2016 by allowing transgender employees and customers to use restrooms that match their gender identity, which sparked national debate.

At a recent retail conference in New York, CEO Brian Cornell stated that Target's success has been built on investing in people and fostering a culture of care and growth.

Meanwhile, Costco Wholesale shareholders recently voted overwhelmingly against a proposal requesting a report on the risks of maintaining diversity and inclusion initiatives.

NHL Rumors: Mikko Rantanen ‘Blindsided’ by Trade to Hurricanes

NHL Rumors: Mikko Rantanen ‘Blindsided’ by Trade to Hurricanes

Mikko Rantanen was reportedly caught off guard by his trade to the Carolina Hurricanes. The blockbuster deal, which took place late Friday night, saw Rantanen and Taylor Hall traded in a three-team exchange between the Hurricanes, Colorado Avalanche, and Chicago Blackhawks. This trade stands as one of the most significant midseason moves in recent NHL history, ranking among the largest trades since the Florida Panthers acquired Matthew Tkachuk in 2022.

As the hockey world continues to digest the news, more details are emerging. According to The Athletic's Chris Johnston, Rantanen had not been engaged in advanced discussions about a potential contract extension prior to the trade and did not anticipate being moved by the Avalanche at this time.

“There were no advanced discussions with Rantanen’s camp about the parameters of a potential extension before the trade was completed. The 28-year-old winger was completely blindsided by the move from the only NHL team he’s ever played for,” Johnston reported.

Mitch McConnell Criticizes Trump’s Defense Secretary Nominee Pete Hegseth

Mitch McConnell Criticizes Trump’s Defense Secretary Nominee Pete Hegseth

Former Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell voiced strong criticism of President Donald Trump’s nominee for Defense Secretary, Pete Hegseth, just before the confirmation vote took place on Friday night.

The vote, which stretched late into the evening, ended in a 50-50 tie, prompting Vice President JD Vance to cast the deciding vote in favor of Hegseth’s confirmation.

McConnell, however, was among those who voted against Hegseth, raising concerns about his qualifications for the position. In a statement issued shortly before the vote, McConnell questioned whether Hegseth had the necessary capabilities for the job.

“A mere desire to be a ‘change agent’ is not enough to fill these shoes,” McConnell said. “And ‘dust on boots’ fails to distinguish this nominee from many predecessors over the last decade. It’s not a prerequisite for success.”

He further stated, “Secretaries with distinguished combat experience and time in the trenches have failed at the job. Mr. Hegseth has yet to demonstrate he will pass this test. But as he assumes office, the stakes of failure are higher than ever.”

Despite his opposition to Hegseth’s confirmation, McConnell stated that he would cooperate with him in efforts to “restore American hard power.”

Following the vote, President Trump, speaking to reporters in California, expressed confidence in Hegseth, calling him an excellent choice for Defense Secretary. Trump also remarked that he wasn’t aware of McConnell’s vote against Hegseth but emphasized, “winning is all that matters.”

Hegseth is set to lead the Department of Defense, which oversees nearly 2.1 million service members, about 780,000 civilians, and a budget of $850 billion.

President Trump Calls for Overhaul of FEMA, Accuses Agency of Incompetence

President Trump Calls for Overhaul of FEMA, Accuses Agency of Incompetence

On his first trip since reclaiming the presidency, U.S. President Donald Trump criticized the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) for its handling of emergency relief efforts in North Carolina following the devastation caused by Hurricane Helene in September. Trump accused FEMA of failing to coordinate disaster response effectively.

During a visit to a neighborhood in Swannanoa, North Carolina, severely impacted by the floods, Trump declared, “FEMA has turned out to be a disaster,” suggesting that the agency should be dismantled. He added, “I think we recommend that FEMA go away.”

Trump's remarks came on Friday as he announced plans to sign an executive order aimed at restructuring or eliminating FEMA. He expressed a preference for states to receive federal funds directly to manage their own disaster responses.

However, experts are skeptical about Trump's ability to shut down FEMA unilaterally. Rob Verchick, a former Obama administration official, explained that such a move would likely require Congressional approval, as FEMA was established by President Jimmy Carter through executive order but operates under Congressional funding and directives for national emergency response.

DJ Unk, the Atlanta rapper best known for his 2006 hit "Walk It Out," has passed away at the age of 43. His family shared the sad news on social media Friday (Jan. 24), with his wife, Sherkita Long-Platt, posting a heartfelt tribute on Facebook: "Please respect me and my family. I just lost my husband, and my kids just lost their father. Our life will never be the same. I LOVE YOU ANTHONY FOREVER."

DJ Unk, born Anthony Leonard Platt on November 28, 1982, was a pioneer in Southern hip-hop. He began his music career in the late '90s as part of the Southern Style DJs collective, alongside DJ Montay and DJ Jelly. His big break came in 2000 when he signed with Big Oomp Records, eventually launching his debut album, Beat'n Down Yo Block!, in 2006. The album featured the breakout hit "Walk It Out," which climbed to No. 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 and became a signature song of the snap music movement. His follow-up single, "2 Step," also earned success, going gold and further cementing his place in hip-hop history.

Unk's second album, 2econd Season, showcased his growth as an artist and reinforced his influence within the snap music genre. His contributions to the Southern hip-hop scene have left an enduring legacy.
