United Airlines Passengers and Crew Injured in Emergency Landing

United Airlines Passengers and Crew Injured in Emergency Landing

A United Airlines Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner was forced to make an emergency landing in Lagos, Nigeria, after a critical mid-flight incident that resulted in multiple injuries to passengers and crew members.

Flight UA613, which was en route from Lagos to Washington D.C., had 245 passengers, eight flight attendants, and three pilots onboard. The emergency occurred shortly after the plane took off from Murtala Muhammed International Airport at 23:59 on Thursday, January 23, 2025. The aircraft returned to Lagos at 03:22 the following morning due to a reported loss of pressure.

Upon landing, the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria had rescue teams ready at Gate D31, including Aerodrome Rescue, Fire Fighting Services, and medical teams. The aircraft deboarded at 03:37 without further incident.

The emergency led to serious medical consequences. Four passengers and two crew members suffered serious injuries, while 27 passengers and five crew members experienced minor injuries.

The swift response of the rescue teams, who arrived within four minutes of the pilot's distress call at 01:20, was critical in managing the situation. Injured passengers were transferred to various medical facilities, with the most seriously injured taken to Duchess Hospital in Ikeja. Some passengers were provided hotel accommodation, while those with minor injuries received immediate treatment and were discharged.

A passenger's account described the chaotic moment when the plane lost pressure and descended rapidly. Passengers, who had just been served meals, were jolted by the sudden drops, with one passenger hitting their head on the ceiling and briefly losing consciousness before receiving medical help.

The flight experienced four hours of turbulent conditions. Initially, the pilot considered making an emergency landing in Ghana, but the plane ultimately returned to Lagos. The aircraft did not suffer major structural damage during the emergency.

United Airlines has confirmed the incident, attributing it to an unspecified "technical issue." The airline stated that the flight returned to Lagos to address the problem, and first responders were on hand to manage the injuries.

In a related note, a similar incident occurred on Delta Air Lines Flight DL175 in August 2023, which encountered severe turbulence, resulting in serious injuries to both passengers and crew. This highlights the unpredictable dangers posed by turbulence and the importance of following safety protocols.
