A Delta Air Lines plane with 80 people on board crash-landed at Toronto’s main airport on Monday, flipping upside down and leaving at least 18 injured but no fatalities. Endeavor Air Flight 4819, which had 76 passengers and 4 crew members, was landing in the afternoon after departing from Minneapolis, Minnesota. The cause of the crash and how the plane ended up flipped with its wings clipped has not been revealed.
Todd Aitken, the airport’s fire chief, stated that it was too early to speculate on the cause, but confirmed that the runway was dry and there were no crosswind conditions.
The paramedic service reported that three people, including a child, a man in his 60s, and a woman in her 40s, were critically injured. All of the injured, including those with minor injuries, were transported to nearby hospitals by ambulance or helicopter.
Dramatic footage from local broadcasts and social media showed passengers stumbling away from the overturned CRJ-900 plane, shielding themselves from strong winds and blowing snow. Firefighters were seen spraying water on the aircraft as smoke emerged from the fuselage, while passengers continued to evacuate.
Deborah Flint, CEO of the airport authority, confirmed that no other planes were involved in the incident. She praised the emergency crews for their swift response, noting they reached the site within minutes and evacuated passengers promptly. Some passengers had already been reunited with their families.
Following the incident, the airport suspended all flights for over two hours, resuming operations at around 5:00 pm local time. Passengers were advised to expect significant delays.
John Nelson, a passenger on the flight, posted a video showing the overturned aircraft on the tarmac, stating, “Our plane crashed. It's upside down,” and adding that most passengers appeared to be fine as they were exiting.
Delta confirmed that the flight, operated by its subsidiary Endeavor, was involved in an incident, and initial reports indicated no fatalities. Delta CEO Ed Bastian expressed the airline's concern, stating that the hearts of the entire Delta family were with those affected by the incident.
The crash occurred amid a massive snowstorm that had struck eastern Canada on Sunday, bringing strong winds and freezing temperatures to Toronto on Monday. The airport had warned of high winds and frigid temperatures but noted that the snow had stopped.
Federal Transport Minister Anita Anand confirmed that 80 people were on board the flight, while Ontario Premier Doug Ford expressed relief that there were no fatalities.
The Canadian Transportation Safety Board has sent a team of investigators to the crash site, with support from the US Federal Aviation Administration. This incident follows other recent air tragedies in North America, including a mid-air collision in Washington that killed 67 people and a medical transport plane crash in Philadelphia that left seven dead.
