"We Can't Always Just Speak in Terms of Party Interests": Shashi Tharoor Defends Praise for Modi-Trump Meeting

Congress MP Shashi Tharoor on Saturday defended his praise of Prime Minister Narendra Modi following his meeting with US President Donald Trump, asserting that his comments were made with India's interests at heart. Tharoor emphasized, "We cannot always speak only in terms of party interests." Speaking to reporters, he explained that PM Modi's visit to the US had resulted in positive outcomes for India.

Tharoor noted that PM Modi's meeting with Trump marked him as the fourth world leader to engage with the US President after his inauguration, underscoring India's growing prominence on the global stage. However, Tharoor also raised questions, such as why the issue of illegal immigrants being returned to India was not addressed. "Did PM Modi raise it behind closed doors? Diplomacy isn't always made public," he remarked.

Praising the agreement to hold trade and tariff negotiations over the next nine months, Tharoor stated, "This is far better than Washington imposing tariffs on us unilaterally, which could have negatively impacted our exports. In my view, something positive has been achieved, and as an Indian, I applaud that." He stressed that his perspective was national, not party-driven, and that he spoke as an elected representative of Thiruvananthapuram, entrusted with exercising sound judgment on issues of national significance.

Tharoor further explained that throughout his 16-year political career, his approach has been consistent: he acknowledges and praises good governance, regardless of the ruling party, while also criticizing when necessary. "When the government, whether Congress or any other party, does something right, it should be recognized. When they do something wrong, it should be criticized," he said.

He also expressed that consistently praising or criticizing the government would diminish his credibility. "If I praise all the time, no one would take me seriously. If I criticize all the time, no one would take me seriously either," he explained.

Tharoor also took aim at the reflexive opposition between political parties, stating, "The real issue arises when the opposition believes everything the government does is wrong, and the government thinks everything the opposition says is wrong. Democracy requires give and take."
