Bibas family members

Hamas has announced that it will return the bodies of four hostages, including those of the Bibas family, on Thursday. The Bibas family members—Shiri, and her young children Kfir and Ariel—were taken by Hamas during the October 7, 2023 attack. Kfir was 9 months old, and Ariel was 4 years old at the time of their kidnapping. Hamas claims that they were killed in an Israeli airstrike, though Israel has not confirmed this.

The Bibas children’s father, Yarden, was released by Hamas earlier this month. Additionally, Hamas said it will release six living hostages on Saturday, double the number originally planned. In exchange, Israel will release all women and individuals under 19 who have been arrested since October 2023, and some rubble-clearing equipment will be allowed into Gaza through Egypt.

In response to the announcement, the Bibas family said they had not yet received official confirmation regarding the return of their loved ones' remains and emphasized that their journey would not be over until they receive definitive confirmation.

Hamas also named two of the six hostages to be released on Saturday: Avera Mengistu and Hisham al-Sayed, who were taken into Gaza in 2014 and 2015. Other hostages to be released include Omer Shem Tov, Eliya Cohen, Omer Wenkert, and Tal Shoam, who were kidnapped during the October 2023 attack.

Hamas agreed to release 33 hostages in the first phase of the ceasefire agreement, with Israel releasing approximately 1,900 Palestinian prisoners. Negotiations for the second phase, which would include the release of the remaining living hostages and the permanent end of the war, were set to begin earlier this month but have not yet started.

Israeli officials indicated that the talks would begin this week, with Foreign Minister Gideon Saar stating that Israel would not tolerate Hamas or any other terrorist organization in Gaza but could extend the ceasefire if the negotiations were constructive.
