GBS Outbreak: 2 New Cases of Guillain-Barre Syndrome Detected, Total Cases in Maharashtra Rise to 205

The number of confirmed Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS) cases in Maharashtra has increased, with the addition of two new cases, bringing the total to 205, according to health officials. Of these, 177 cases have been confirmed, with 20 patients requiring ventilator support. The death toll remains steady at eight.

The majority of GBS cases have been reported in Pune, with a 53-year-old man in Mumbai becoming the city's first fatality linked to the condition. GBS is a rare disorder where the immune system attacks the peripheral nerves, leading to muscle weakness, numbness in limbs, and difficulties with swallowing and breathing.

In response to the outbreak, the Pune Municipal Corporation has sealed 19 private reverse-osmosis (RO) water plants in the Nanded village area, the epicenter of the GBS cases. Testing revealed that water from these facilities was unsafe for consumption. The affected RO plants, located in the Dhayari-Nanded region, had been supplying bottled water to many locals.

To prevent further contamination, the PMC's water supply department announced plans to implement standard operating procedures (SOPs) to ensure safe water distribution in the area. Prithviraj P B, PMC's additional commissioner, confirmed that the sealed plants would cease operations following the findings that their water was unfit for drinking.
