Why Railway Stocks Like IRFC, RVNL, IRCTC, Titagarh, RailTel, RITES, and Jupiter Wagons Dropped After Budget 2025 Speech?

Railway Stocks Fall: Shares of railway companies such as IRFC, RVNL, IRCTC, Titagarh, RailTel, RITES, Jupiter Wagons, IRCON International, BEML, Texmaco Rail, and Concor plummeted following Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman's Budget 2025 speech.

Reason for Railway Stocks' Decline: Railway stocks experienced a sharp decline on Saturday, February 1, soon after Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman concluded her Budget 2025 address. Shares of companies like IRFC, RVNL, IRCTC, Titagarh, RailTel, RITES, Jupiter Wagons, IRCON International, BEML, Texmaco Rail, and Concor fell by up to 8% post-budget announcement.

As of 1 PM, IRFC shares dropped 5%, trading at ₹144 on the NSE, while RVNL shares fell 7% to ₹445. IRCTC shares were down by 3%, priced at ₹798.

Titagarh Railsystems saw a more than 6% drop, trading at ₹956, while RailTel Corporation’s shares fell 4.5% to ₹387. Ircon International’s shares lost over 7%, dropping to ₹205. Jupiter Wagons and Texmaco Rail & Engineering both saw declines of over 7%. Concor and BEML shares were down by 4% and 2%, respectively.

Why the Sell-off Happened: The sharp sell-off in railway stocks was triggered by the absence of significant reforms for the sector in the Budget, which fell short of analysts’ expectations. Many had anticipated a substantial increase in the budget allocation for the Ministry of Railways, in the range of 18-20%, which had previously boosted investor sentiment and sent railway stocks higher.

This is not the first time such a reaction has occurred—back in July 2024, railway stocks also fell sharply when the interim budget did not include major announcements for the sector.
