Pelicans' Dejounte Murray suffers lower right leg injury vs. Celtics

 New Orleans Pelicans guard Dejounte Murray left the game against the Boston Celtics on Friday night after suffering a lower right leg injury in the first quarter. The team is concerned that Murray may be sidelined for an extended period.

Pelicans head coach Willie Green mentioned he briefly saw Murray after the game, which New Orleans lost 118-116. Murray experienced a non-contact injury, grabbing at his right Achilles tendon before limping to the bench.

"It's a challenge. It's a challenge," Green said, expressing concern but not offering further details about the injury. He added that Murray would undergo imaging, with more information expected after that.

Murray was attempting a shot and then chasing after his miss when he fell to the floor, grabbing near his right foot. He hobbled off the court toward the bench.

“It hurt a lot, I can’t lie to you,” said Trey Murphy III, who scored 40 points in the loss. “He’s been through a lot already, and it doesn’t help. But sometimes, God puts you through situations to deliver a bigger message. I think that’s what’s happening right now. It’s not always easy to understand, but there’s always a reason.”

Shortly after the injury, the Pelicans announced Murray would not return to the game.

“It’s extremely difficult when you see a guy who means so much to our team and works so hard go down like that,” Green said. “We’ll continue to pray for him and see what happens once he gets the imaging.”

The Pelicans were already missing Zion Williamson, Brandon Ingram, and Herb Jones due to injuries.

“These are the challenges we’ve been facing all season,” Green added.

With a record of 12-37, the Pelicans are near the bottom of the Western Conference and out of playoff contention. Losing Murray again would only add to the frustration of a season that has gone awry.

“We’ll make sure to continue supporting him,” Green said. “We’ll wait for the results, but whatever happens, we’ll be there for him.”
