Figure Skaters and Coaches Among Those Believed to Be on American Airlines Flight that Crashed Near D.C.

Several figure skaters and their coaches are feared to be among the passengers on the American Airlines flight that crashed on Wednesday near Washington D.C.'s Reagan Airport. Spencer Lane, one of the skaters, had shared an Instagram story from the flight just hours before the crash. Team USA pair skater Luke Wang expressed his grief on X, saying, “Praying for all those on the flight from Wichita to D.C. Among the passengers were skaters and coaches. Absolutely heartbreaking.”

Russian news agency TASS reported that former world champion pair skaters Yevgenia Shishkova and Vadim Naumov were also aboard the flight. The couple won the World Championship in 1994 and were married.

U.S. Figure Skating confirmed that several members of the skating community and their family members were on the plane, returning from a camp after the skating championships in Wichita, Kansas. Alex Schauffler, of U.S. Figure Skating, told the New York Times, "We are devastated by this unspeakable tragedy."
