Plane Crashes in South Sudan During Takeoff, Indian Among 20 Killed

A small plane crashed in a remote area of South Sudan on Wednesday, killing at least 20 people, including an Indian national, according to reports from AFP.

The flight, chartered by the Chinese oil company Greater Pioneer Operating Company (GPOC), had 21 people on board, including two pilots. The crash occurred in Unity State, an oil-rich region in the country.

Gatwech Bipal, the information minister for Unity state, confirmed that the plane was en route to Juba, the South Sudanese capital, when it crashed shortly after takeoff from an oil field near Unity State. The plane went down around 500 meters from the airport.

Of the 21 people aboard, 16 were South Sudanese, two were Chinese nationals, and one was Indian. The minister also reported that one person, a South Sudanese engineer, survived and was taken to Bentiu State Hospital for treatment.

The cause of the crash is still unknown, and authorities have not yet released the identities of the victims. Local media indicated that the passengers were oil workers.

Air Travel Safety in South Sudan
South Sudan, which became an independent nation in 2011, is a significant oil producer in the region but struggles with infrastructure, particularly in transportation. Air accidents are common, often attributed to factors like overloading and poor weather conditions.

In 2021, a cargo plane carrying fuel for the UN's World Food Programme crashed near Juba, killing five people. Overloading was believed to have played a role in the 2015 Antonov crash in Juba that claimed 36 lives, and in a 2017 incident, 37 people narrowly escaped death after their plane collided with a fire truck on the runway in Wau.
