Hudson Thames Talks About 'Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man' and His Concerns on Representation and 'Woke' Themes

Voice actor Hudson Thames opens up about his fears regarding representation and "woke" themes ahead of the animated series premiere.

Disney+ is gearing up for the launch of its new animated series Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, set to premiere on January 29, 2025. Hudson Thames reprises his role as Peter Parker, aka Spider-Man, and his comments about the show have sparked plenty of conversation online.

In an interview with Collider, Thames shared his thoughts on the series, saying, "I thought it was awesome. My biggest fear was that it would be annoying and woke, but it wasn’t. It was so well written, and I was like, ‘Yes, this is great, it feels real.’” While his comments about the show’s approach to “woke” themes have garnered both praise and criticism, they reflect ongoing conversations about representation in entertainment.

The term "woke" has evolved from its original meaning—being aware of social inequalities—to often being used pejoratively to criticize projects that focus on diversity or social issues. Thames admitted his initial concerns about how certain character changes would be received, particularly in regard to the diverse reimagining of characters like Norman Osborn, voiced by Colman Domingo.

Thames, the eldest of five brothers, feels his own upbringing influences his perspective on the high school setting in the series. He noted, “It felt like it was doing justice to the experiences of young people today.” Though Thames praised the series for its fresh take inspired by the original comic books, his reference to the show being "annoying and woke" has sparked a wide range of reactions.

While many fans appreciated his honest concerns, others took issue with his choice of words. One social media user responded, "Oh for heaven’s sake… Marvel has always been 'Woke'. Spider-Man has always been 'Woke'. Why do you think Spider-Man calls himself Friendly Neighborhood for a reason?” This comment highlights the character's long history of standing for justice and inclusivity, key aspects that have always been part of Spider-Man’s identity.

Thames' co-stars have also faced criticism, particularly Colman Domingo, who encountered racist comments after being cast as Norman Osborn, a traditionally white character. This decision has fueled broader debates on race and representation, especially regarding beloved characters being reinterpreted for modern audiences.

Produced by Marvel Animation, the series aims to stay true to Spider-Man’s comic book roots, drawing inspiration from the 1960s versions of the character while also incorporating elements from more recent adaptations, such as Tom Holland’s portrayal in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Showrunner Jeff Trammell has emphasized that this animated series should be seen as a unique take, separate from the MCU, allowing for new dynamics and perspectives on the characters.

Trammell has also addressed the critiques of the show’s animation style, encouraging audiences to give it a chance, saying, “I think our style grows on you. So, I would say ‘give it a chance’.”

The series will stay true to Spider-Man's core themes—his struggles, resilience, and sense of morality—while introducing new interpretations of familiar storylines from Peter Parker’s high school years.

Despite the potential for controversy, early reviews from critics have been mostly positive, praising the series’ representation and unique take on the Spider-Man legacy. Thames expressed pride in his role and hopes the series resonates with fans, balancing inclusivity without compromising the essence of the character.

With Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man premiering soon, fans can look forward to exploring a fresh chapter in Spider-Man’s expansive legacy. The show features Thames alongside Colman Domingo, Hugh Dancy as Otto Octavius, and Charlie Cox reprising his role as Daredevil. The first two episodes will debut on Disney+, offering a new and independent take on Spider-Man that appeals to both new viewers and long-time fans.
