Nirvana Delivers Surprise Reunion Performance with Joan Jett, Kim Gordon, and St. Vincent
In a surprise twist no one saw coming, Nirvana reunited for a special one-night-only performance with a rotating lineup of female singers stepping in for the late Kurt Cobain. Fans witnessed the iconic grunge band, featuring Dave Grohl on drums, Pat Smear on guitar, and Krist Novoselic on bass, performing live Thursday night.
Adding to the excitement, Grohl’s 18-year-old daughter, Violet, who has frequently joined her father onstage, made a special appearance, performing Nirvana’s melancholic track "All Apologies" alongside the band.
This surprise set was part of the FireAid benefit concerts at Inglewood's Kia Forum, a series of shows that aimed to raise funds for recovery efforts after the devastating wildfires in LA County that claimed at least 24 lives.
The band powered through four Nirvana hits, although some songs faced technical issues, particularly St. Vincent’s intense rendition of "Breed." Despite that, the high energy and volume never faltered, with Kim Gordon delivering an electric performance of “School” and Joan Jett roaring through “Territorial Pissings.”
Nirvana’s last performance with Cobain, who tragically passed away in 1994 at 27, took place in Germany in March of that year. The band's most recent performance with guest singers like Gordon, Jett, and Lorde occurred during their Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction in 2014.
The FireAid benefit concert featured an all-star lineup, including performances by Joni Mitchell, The Black Crowes, Stevie Nicks, and the Red Hot Chili Peppers. At the nearby Intuit Dome, other acts like Stevie Wonder, Lady Gaga, Billie Eilish, Rod Stewart, and Katy Perry also took the stage.
Although the Nirvana reunion was a surprise, it was part of a larger effort to support recovery from the wildfires, with proceeds benefiting both short-term relief and long-term prevention initiatives in Southern California, managed by the Annenberg Foundation.
This benefit concert came just days before the 67th Annual Grammy Awards, which were to be held at Crypto.com Arena in LA. Many events related to the awards were canceled due to the fires, but others, such as a MusiCares concert honoring The Grateful Dead and the Clive Davis Pre-Grammy Gala, will proceed with a philanthropic focus supporting first responders.
