Singer and actress Marianne Faithfull has passed away at 78, her spokesperson confirmed.
Born in Hampstead in December 1946, Faithfull rose to fame with hits like "As Tears Go By," which reached the UK Top 10 in 1964, and for her role in the 1968 film The Girl on a Motorcycle. She was also well-known as the girlfriend of Mick Jagger in the 1960s, inspiring songs such as Wild Horses and You Can’t Always Get What You Want. After battling heroin addiction in the 1970s, Faithfull revived her career with the 1979 album Broken English.
Mick Jagger paid tribute, calling Faithfull “a wonderful friend, a beautiful singer, and a great actress,” expressing his sadness. Keith Richards also shared his sorrow, saying he would "miss her," while Ronnie Wood posted heartfelt tributes on Instagram.
Faithfull passed away peacefully in London, surrounded by her family, her spokesperson said.
Throughout her life, Faithfull faced several health challenges, including bulimia, breast cancer, and emphysema due to years of smoking. In 2020, she was hospitalized for 22 days with Covid-19, and doctors did not expect her to survive. However, she defied the odds and released her 21st album, She Walks in Beauty, a year later.
A quintessential figure of the 1960s rock and roll era, Faithfull was discovered at age 16 by Rolling Stones' manager Andrew Loog Oldham, who gave her "As Tears Go By," the first song written by Jagger and Richards. Her version became a hit, and she quickly became an icon of the British Invasion in the US.
Faithfull’s relationship with Jagger made her a tabloid sensation, and after their breakup, she struggled with drug addiction and homelessness in Soho. Her career was reignited with Broken English, which introduced a deeper, more mature sound that earned critical acclaim and a Grammy nomination.
In her later years, Faithfull collaborated with artists like PJ Harvey, Nick Cave, David Bowie, Lou Reed, and Metallica. She also continued acting, starring in plays like Chekhov's Three Sisters and making appearances in shows like Absolutely Fabulous.
Her final album, Negative Capability (2018), explored themes of aging, loneliness, and loss. The album included a moving re-recording of “As Tears Go By,” which left the studio in tears, according to producer Rob Ellis.
Faithfull was honored with the World Lifetime Achievement Award in 2009 and made a commandeur of the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in France.
Her longtime friend, BBC Radio 2 presenter Bob Harris, described her as an “encapsulation of the sixties,” noting her transformation from Jagger's girlfriend into a respected artist in her own right.
Faithfull was married and divorced three times and is survived by her son, Nicholas Dunbar.
