India pacer Harshit Rana's T20I debut as a concussion substitute for all-rounder Shivam Dube in India's fourth T20I victory over England in Pune has sparked controversy among fans and pundits.

The decision by match referee Javagal Srinath to approve Rana as a ‘like-for-like’ replacement for Dube, who had played a key role with a match-defining half-century, did not sit well with England’s captain Jos Buttler, particularly after his team lost by 15 runs, missing the chance to level the series. Rana, who replaced Dube after he was struck on the head by a short ball from Jamie Overton, ended up being a game-changer, claiming three wickets in his four overs.

Former England captain Alastair Cook expressed his disbelief over the substitution. Speaking to TNT Sports, Cook said, “It makes no sense to replace a big-hitting batting all-rounder, who bowled one over in the 2024 IPL, with a player who can't bat and bowls heavy seam.”

He added, “It seems absolute madness that you are allowed to do it, but credit to the lad on debut. However, he shouldn't have been allowed to play in that situation. It gave the captain another brilliant option.”
