Biography Overview
George W. Bush, born on July 6, 1946, is an American politician and businessman who served as the 43rd president of the United States from 2001 to 2009. A member of the prominent Bush family and the Republican Party, he also served as the 46th governor of Texas from 1995 to 2000.

The eldest son of George H. W. Bush, the 41st president, Bush began his career in the Texas Air National Guard and later worked in the oil industry after graduating from Harvard Business School in 1975. He co-owned the Texas Rangers baseball team before entering politics, where he was elected governor of Texas in 1994. As governor, Bush implemented key reforms in areas such as education, tort law, and criminal justice, and helped Texas become a leader in wind-generated electricity.

In the 2000 presidential election, Bush defeated Democratic Vice President Al Gore after a contentious battle that ultimately resulted in a Supreme Court decision to halt a recount in Florida. During his first term, Bush passed significant legislation, including a tax-cut program and the No Child Left Behind Act. He also pursued socially conservative policies, such as the Partial-Birth Abortion Ban Act and the establishment of faith-based initiatives.

The September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks greatly shaped his presidency, leading to the war on terror and the creation of the Department of Homeland Security. Bush authorized military action in Afghanistan to oust the Taliban and eliminate al-Qaeda, and later ordered the 2003 invasion of Iraq based on the false assumption that Iraq possessed weapons of mass destruction and had links to al-Qaeda. In addition, Bush signed the Medicare Modernization Act, which established Medicare Part D.

Bush won re-election in 2004, defeating Democratic Senator John Kerry, but faced mounting challenges during his second term, including the handling of Hurricane Katrina and criticism over the Iraq War. As the U.S. entered the Great Recession, his administration implemented economic measures, including the Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP), to stabilize the financial system.

After leaving office, Bush returned to Texas, where he largely stayed out of the public eye. Although his presidency was highly polarized, with both high approval ratings following the 9/11 attacks and low approval ratings during the financial crisis, public opinion of Bush has improved since he left office. Historians typically rank him in the lower half of U.S. presidents.

Early Life
George Walker Bush was born in New Haven, Connecticut, to George H. W. Bush and Barbara Pierce. He grew up in Midland and Houston, Texas, alongside his four siblings. Bush's paternal grandfather, Prescott Bush, served as a U.S. senator, and his father was vice president and later president of the United States.

Bush attended various schools in Texas and Massachusetts, including Phillips Academy in Andover, where he became head cheerleader. He graduated from Yale University in 1968 with a degree in history and later earned an MBA from Harvard Business School, making him the only U.S. president to hold an MBA.

Personal Life
In 1977, Bush married Laura Welch, a schoolteacher and librarian. The couple has twin daughters, Barbara and Jenna. Bush is a devout Christian and credits his faith with helping him overcome past struggles with alcohol.

Hobbies
Bush enjoys reading biographies and histories and has painted several well-known collections, including "Out of Many, One," featuring portraits of immigrants, and "Portraits of Courage," a tribute to U.S. veterans. He is also known for his love of cigars and golf.
