Tulsi Gabbard Clarifies Stance on Snowden Pardon During Senate Confirmation Hearing

Tulsi Gabbard, nominated by Donald Trump for Director of National Intelligence, faced intense questioning during her Senate confirmation hearing on Thursday. A major point of contention was her previous support for Edward Snowden, the former NSA contractor who exposed U.S. surveillance programs before fleeing to Russia. Gabbard had previously described Snowden as "brave," but during the hearing, she stated that she would not recommend a pardon for him.

Senator Mark Warner, a Democrat, pressed Gabbard on her past comments, reminding her that she had previously praised Snowden. Gabbard responded by acknowledging that while Snowden broke the law, his actions revealed illegal and unconstitutional surveillance practices. Warner, labeling Snowden a "traitor," continued to push for a definitive stance, but Gabbard maintained her position that Snowden's actions were illegal.

Later in the hearing, Gabbard emphasized that, if confirmed, she would not recommend a pardon for Snowden, but she would work to strengthen whistleblower protections within the intelligence community. Gabbard, a lieutenant colonel in the National Guard with military experience but no formal background in intelligence, has never led a government agency, making her nomination controversial. She previously served in Congress representing Hawaii and ran for president in 2020.
