Will Ferrell Says Some 'Elf' Fans Were Unhappy With His "Midlife Crisis" Take on Buddy the Elf

Will Ferrell had some fun with his beloved Elf character, Buddy, at a Los Angeles Kings game last December, but not all fans were thrilled with his twist on the classic role.

Ferrell went viral when he showed up dressed as Buddy, but with a decidedly different vibe—beer in hand, a fake cigarette hanging from his mouth, and a disgruntled expression. The actor, known for his humor, found the idea hilarious, but shared with People magazine that some fans didn’t agree. “Some people were not too happy,” Ferrell said, adding that they felt he wasn’t being true to the character. “They thought, ‘Please be true to the character. That was not cool,’” he explained.

However, Ferrell stood by his version of Buddy, saying, “Buddy was having a bad day. Yeah. He just went to a hockey game, smoked cigarettes and drank beer.”

In Elf, directed by Jon Favreau, Ferrell’s character Buddy is raised as an elf at the North Pole and embarks on a journey to New York City to find his estranged father. The film has become a holiday classic since its release in 2003.

Ferrell recently opened up about the inspiration for his updated Buddy look on the New Heights podcast with Travis and Jason Kelce. He explained, “We’re season ticket holders for the L.A. Kings. We have seats right on the glass, which are amazing. I told my wife, ‘Over the break, it would be funny if I just got a Buddy the Elf costume and didn’t shave for like a week, and I’m just sitting there with a candy cigarette and I’m just gonna sit there for a period and see how people react.’ And that was it.”
