In a surprising move on Wednesday, U.S. President Donald Trump revealed a plan to detain thousands of undocumented migrants at Guantanamo Bay, shifting attention from ongoing confusion following the White House's withdrawal of a controversial order to freeze federal funds.

Trump stated that he had signed an executive order directing the construction of a detention camp at the Guantanamo Bay military facility in Cuba, capable of holding up to 30,000 individuals he described as "criminal illegal aliens." The facility, used since the 9/11 attacks to hold terrorism suspects, would become part of his broader crackdown on illegal immigration during his second term.

In his announcement, Trump framed the plan as a significant step toward tackling "migrant crime," saying the facility would "double our capacity immediately" to detain undocumented migrants.

A Controversial Proposal
Guantanamo Bay currently holds 15 detainees from conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq, though the facility once housed as many as 800 individuals. The expansion proposal has sparked widespread criticism from human rights organizations.

Trump's new Defense Secretary, Pete Hegseth, clarified that the new migrant detention center would not be used for the remaining 9/11 detainees, and suggested that a golf course could be repurposed for the new facilities.

The Cuban government condemned the plan, labeling it an "act of brutality."

Legislation to Increase Migrant Detention
The announcement coincided with Trump signing the Laken Riley Act, a new piece of legislation aimed at expanding the detention of migrants charged with theft or violence. The law is named after Laken Riley, a U.S. nursing student murdered by a Venezuelan undocumented migrant who had been arrested twice before her killing but was released.

Trump emphasized the importance of the law, saying that Riley's name would be honored through the country's legal system.

Confusion Surrounding Federal Funding Freeze
The Guantanamo Bay announcement followed a wave of confusion surrounding another recent White House initiative. Earlier this week, Trump ordered the freezing of potentially trillions of dollars in federal grants and loans, including funds for healthcare programs for low-income Americans. This move sparked alarm before a U.S. judge issued a temporary injunction.

While the White House rescinded the memo related to the freeze on Wednesday, Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt clarified that the freeze itself remained "in full force," with other efforts to limit "woke" spending continuing.

Government Overhaul and Staff Cuts
Trump’s push to reduce government size included offering most federal employees the option to leave their jobs in exchange for eight months' severance pay. He also announced a directive that any government worker who does not return to the office by February 6 would face termination.

Additionally, former top U.S. military officer Mark Milley became the latest public figure to have his security clearance and detail revoked under Trump's administration.
