USDA Inspector General Phyllis Fong Removed by Trump Administration
The Trump Administration has dismissed 17 Inspector Generals from various federal agencies, including Phyllis K. Fong, J.D., who had served as the Inspector General at the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) since 2002.
As Inspector General, Fong led audits, evaluations, investigations, and law enforcement efforts regarding USDA's programs and operations. The Office of Inspector General (OIG) plays a key role in ensuring the economy, efficiency, and effectiveness of federal programs, while also addressing issues like fraud, waste, and abuse.
A notable example of her work in food safety occurred in October 2024 when she called for an internal USDA investigation following a deadly listeriosis outbreak tied to Boar’s Head ready-to-eat (RTE) deli meats. After USDA inspection reports uncovered a history of significant food safety and hygiene violations at Boar’s Head’s Jarratt, Virginia plant, Fong initiated an investigation to determine how the USDA mishandled these ongoing safety concerns.
Other Inspector Generals dismissed in this wave, who also oversee parts of U.S. food safety and agriculture, include Christi Grimm, M.P.A., the former Inspector General of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), which oversees the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and Sean O’Donnell, M.S., J.D., the former Inspector General of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
