Medical jet with six aboard crashes into Philadelphia neighbourhood

A small medical transport plane, carrying six people, crashed into several buildings in northeast Philadelphia, causing fires and injuries on the ground. The plane, operated by Jet Rescue Air Ambulance, was on a mission to transport a critically ill child and accompanying crew. The crash occurred on Friday evening, with the aircraft carrying four crew members, a child patient, and the patient’s escort.

Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro called the incident an “awful aviation disaster” during a press conference, expressing concern about potential fatalities. Emergency responders quickly arrived at the scene, where locals witnessed a chaotic and fiery aftermath, with debris scattered across the streets.

The child on board had been receiving medical treatment for a life-threatening condition and was en route back to Mexico when the crash occurred. She was accompanied by her mother, a pilot, a co-pilot, a doctor, and a paramedic. The treatment had been funded by a third-party charity, according to Jet Rescue Air Ambulance spokesperson Shai Gold.

The Mexican Consulate in Philadelphia issued a statement for affected nationals, and the city’s mayor, Cherelle Parker, urged residents to avoid touching any debris and to report it to 911. The crash took place near the Roosevelt Mall in a densely populated area with terraced housing and shops.

Videos shared online show the plane descending rapidly, igniting a massive fireball upon impact. Witnesses described hearing a loud explosion and seeing debris and burning wreckage scatter across the street. One witness described the explosion as lighting up the entire sky.

The Learjet 55 had taken off from Northeast Philadelphia Airport at around 6:30 p.m. and crashed less than four miles away. The flight was en route to Springfield-Branson National Airport in Missouri. The FAA initially reported two people on board but later revised the number to six.

The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) are investigating the crash. President Donald Trump expressed his condolences, noting the tragic loss of lives.

This incident follows closely behind another deadly aviation accident in Washington, D.C., just two days earlier, in which a commercial jet and a military helicopter collided, likely killing all 67 people aboard.
