White House Confirms FAA Approval for Drones in New Jersey During First Press Briefing

In her inaugural press briefing, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed that the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) had authorized drone activities in New Jersey, addressing public concerns and underscoring the importance of regulation and transparency.

The White House's announcement comes after several mysterious drone sightings over multiple U.S. states last year, which raised alarms among residents. Leavitt clarified that many of the drones observed were not only known to the government but were also officially authorized by the FAA.

In New Jersey, residents were particularly concerned about the presence of drones flying over restricted airspace. In December, the FAA, FBI, Homeland Security, and the Department of Defense collectively received over 5,000 reports regarding drone sightings, with around 100 considered credible enough for further investigation.

Leavitt explained that the FAA had authorized the drones flying over New Jersey for research and other specific purposes. "The drones observed in large numbers over New Jersey were approved by the FAA for research and various other reasons," she stated during the briefing on Tuesday.

Leavitt reassured the public and reporters, emphasizing that "this was not the enemy," and clarified that some of the drones belonged to private citizens. She noted that curiosity had played a role in escalating concerns. Despite her reassurances, the drone sightings sparked bipartisan criticism, with several lawmakers suggesting the military should intervene and remove drones if their origin and purpose remained unclear.

The FAA's approval of drone activities highlights the need for better communication and transparency from government agencies about the use of drones in civilian areas. As drone technology is increasingly used for research, surveillance, and other purposes, a balanced approach is needed to ensure public safety while supporting innovation.
