Matthew Lillard Returning for ‘Scream 7’

Matthew Lillard is back for more thrills in the “Scream” universe. The actor, who starred as the memorable character Stu Macher in Wes Craven’s original “Scream,” is set to return for the upcoming seventh installment of the franchise. While Lillard did not appear in the sequels due to the fate of his character in the first film, his return comes as a major surprise for fans.

Following the departure of Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega from the franchise after leading two recent revivals, “Scream 7” is being reimagined as a throwback film. The cast will include returning icons like Neve Campbell and Courteney Cox. Additionally, Kevin Williamson, who penned the original “Scream,” will direct this new chapter, with Paramount scheduling the film for release on February 26, 2026.

Lillard’s return is especially unexpected since his character, the laid-back killer Stu Macher, was presumed dead after being electrocuted in the first film. However, “Scream” has a history of bringing characters back in creative ways—Skeet Ulrich, who portrayed Billy Loomis, Stu’s accomplice, reprised his role in the 2022 “Scream” revival, appearing in a character's hallucinations.

After the success of the 2022 “Scream” revival, producers quickly pushed forward with “Scream VI,” which was released just 15 months later. However, “Scream 7” has faced a more complicated production journey. Barrera, who starred in the last two installments, was fired by Spyglass Media in November 2023 after her controversial comments regarding the Israel-Hamas conflict. This led to Barrera’s removal from the project, marking a difficult chapter in the film's development.
