Who was Salwan Momika? Iraqi Man Who Burned the Quran in 2023 Shot Dead in Sweden

Salwan Momika, an Iraqi refugee who became infamous for his involvement in Quran-burning protests in Sweden, was shot dead on Wednesday night. Momika had faced hate crime charges and had his Swedish residency permit revoked after his controversial protests. Five people have been arrested in connection with the killing. Following his death, the court postponed its ruling, and Swedish authorities have launched an investigation.

Salwan Momika, an Iraqi activist and refugee, sparked global outrage in 2023 when he burned copies of the Quran during protests in Sweden. Late on Wednesday, Swedish authorities confirmed his death, stating that he was found shot in his home in Hovsjo, Sodertalje. He succumbed to gunshot wounds. The victim was identified as the 38-year-old Salwan Momika.

The Stockholm district court had been set to issue its verdict on Thursday morning, just hours after Momika's fatal shooting. The incident occurred around 11 PM, with reports suggesting that Momika may have been live-streaming at the time. Five people have been detained by the police, but authorities have not yet confirmed his identity or the details of his injuries. The court also postponed its decision due to the defendant's death.

Quran Burnings and Global Backlash

Momika, along with fellow protester Salwan Najem, was at the center of protests in 2023 where they set fire to copies of the Quran and made provocative gestures. These protests led to widespread condemnation, particularly from Muslim-majority nations, and sparked violent demonstrations, including an attack on the Swedish embassy in Baghdad.

In Tehran, protests erupted with people waving Iranian flags and carrying copies of the Quran, chanting slogans against Sweden and other Western nations. The global backlash intensified, and Sweden's intelligence agency raised the terror alert to the second-highest level due to the heightened security risks.

Momika's Immigration and Legal Troubles

Momika, who fled to Sweden years earlier after facing legal charges in Iraq, had been involved in various legal issues, including accusations of deception. In response to his Quran-burning protests, Sweden revoked his residency permit in October 2023, citing false claims in his asylum application. While Iraq requested his extradition, Sweden issued a temporary stay on his deportation. Momika later tried to seek asylum in Norway but was deported back to Sweden, where he was granted a one-year permit.

Sweden has condemned the desecration of the Quran but emphasized its commitment to upholding free speech laws. The investigation into Momika's death is ongoing as authorities try to uncover the motive behind the shooting.
