Emilia Perez Actor Karla Sofia Gascon Deactivates X Account Following Backlash Over "Controversial" Posts
Actor Karla Sofia Gascon, known for her role in the Oscar-nominated film Emilia Perez, deactivated her X (formerly Twitter) account after facing significant backlash over past controversial posts from 2020 and 2021.
According to Variety, Gascon's X account was removed by Friday morning.
The actress came under heavy criticism after users resurfaced tweets in which she shared controversial opinions on Muslims, George Floyd, and diversity at the Oscars.
In response to the controversy, Gascon apologized in a statement to Variety, saying, "I want to acknowledge the conversation around my past social media posts that have caused hurt. As someone in a marginalized community, I understand this suffering, and I am deeply sorry to those I have caused pain. My entire life has been dedicated to fighting for a better world, and I believe that light will always triumph over darkness."
One of the resurfaced tweets included Gascon criticizing the diversity at the 2021 Oscars ceremony, stating, "More and more the #Oscars are looking like a ceremony for independent and protest films. I didn’t know if I was watching an Afro-Korean festival, a Black Lives Matter demonstration, or the 8M. Apart from that, an ugly, ugly gala."
Gascon also made derogatory comments about George Floyd, referring to him as a "drug addict swindler" following his death at the hands of a police officer in 2020, which ignited widespread protests across the United States.
