Scientists Move ‘Doomsday Clock’ One Second Closer to Midnight

The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists (BAS) moved the "Doomsday Clock" forward by one second, now set at 89 seconds to midnight, signaling the increasing threats to humanity's survival. This adjustment highlights the risks posed by Russia’s nuclear threats amid its war with Ukraine, the military use of artificial intelligence, and the ongoing challenges of climate change.

BAS Chair Daniel Holz stated that this change serves as "a warning to all world leaders." The new setting places the clock just 89 seconds from midnight, a symbolic representation of the potential for global catastrophe.

Originally set at seven minutes to midnight in 1947 by BAS during the Cold War, the clock has been used to alert the world to the dangers of nuclear conflict and other existential threats.

In their statement, the BAS emphasized the urgency of the situation, noting, "Conflict in the Middle East risks escalating into a broader war at any moment, and the Russia-Ukraine war could quickly escalate to nuclear conflict due to a rash decision, accident, or miscalculation."
