The Challenge: All Stars Brings Back the Rivals Format
MTV’s The Challenge franchise is tapping into nostalgia with the return of the Rivals theme for The Challenge: All Stars Season 5. Premiering on January 29, the new season also marks a significant change, as the spinoff returns to its original home on MTV after previously streaming on Paramount+.
Showrunner Emer Harkin shared that the season features 13 rival teams selected based on real, ongoing conflicts. Some teams, like Steve Meinke and Adam Larson, have had recent clashes on All Stars Season 4, while others, such as Veronica Portillo and Katie Doyle, have been feuding since The Inferno in 2004. The season even includes exes Ashley Kelsey and Dario Medrano, who haven’t spoken in years.
Harkin emphasized the importance of selecting authentic rivalries, diving deep into long-standing tensions and even some behind-the-scenes disputes that fans may not be aware of. “We focused on finding duos that felt fresh and varied,” she explained.
The season also sees the return of some controversial competitors, including Ashley Mitchell, who was absent from The Challenge 40, and Turbo Çamkıran, whose return sparked fan debates due to past behavior. Harkin assured fans that cast members’ personal growth is always considered. “We are always in communication with the cast about their development and the work they’re doing on themselves,” she added.
With a fiery mix of rivalries, The Challenge: All Stars 5 promises intense competition and drama, all while celebrating the franchise’s legacy. Fans can tune in as the season kicks off on MTV.
