NBA Investigating Unusual Betting Patterns Involving Terry Rozier

Federal prosecutors are currently investigating unusual betting patterns related to Terry Rozier’s performance in a game almost two years ago, the NBA confirmed on Thursday. The investigation is part of a broader probe that also led to the lifetime ban of Toronto Raptors player Jontay Porter.

The Wall Street Journal initially reported on the matter, revealing that Rozier, who played for the Charlotte Hornets during the game in question and now plays for the Miami Heat, has not been charged with any crime, nor has he been accused of any wrongdoing.

The NBA had previously looked into the incident and found no violations of league rules. In March 2023, the NBA became aware of unusual betting activity connected to Rozier during a game between the Hornets and New Orleans Pelicans on March 23, 2023. While Rozier played the first 9 minutes and 36 seconds of the game, he didn’t return due to a foot injury and did not play again that season. Charlotte, which had no playoff hopes, shut him down for the remainder of the season.

Rozier’s performance during the first quarter, where he recorded 5 points, 4 rebounds, and 2 assists, was noticeably below his typical game statistics. This led some bettors to voice suspicions on social media, claiming that something “shady” had occurred with the prop bets involving Rozier’s stats for the night.

A frustrated bettor posted a ticket showing a $65 wager that would have returned $401.95, had Rozier exceeded his prop bet of 32.5 combined points, assists, and rebounds. However, Rozier's performance fell short. Other bettors speculated that they had “inside info” about Rozier’s early exit from the game.

Ahead of the game, some sportsbooks offered Rozier prop bets, but these were mysteriously removed hours before the game began. Rozier had not been listed on the injury report.

Rozier, 30, is currently in the third year of a four-year, $96.3 million contract.

This investigation echoes the one involving Jontay Porter, who was banned for life last April after a probe revealed he had shared confidential information with bettors and even placed wagers on games, including betting on his own team to lose.

Porter pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit wire fraud and is awaiting sentencing.

The probe into Porter began after odd betting patterns emerged around his performance in a March 20, 2024, game against Sacramento. It was revealed that Porter had provided a bettor with information about his health status before the game, and that an individual placed a significant bet on Porter to fall short of the statistical targets set for him.
