JASPER COUNTY, Ind. — Matthew Huttle, a 42-year-old man from Hobart, Indiana, who was recently pardoned by President Donald Trump for his involvement in the January 6, 2021 Capitol riot, was shot and killed by a sheriff’s deputy during a traffic stop on Sunday afternoon.

The incident occurred around 4:15 p.m. when a deputy from the Jasper County Sheriff’s Department stopped Huttle’s vehicle on State Road 14 near the Jasper/Pulaski county line. Indiana State Police stated that the deputy attempted to arrest Huttle, but he allegedly resisted and engaged in a struggle with the officer. This confrontation led the deputy to fire his weapon, fatally wounding Huttle.

State police confirmed that Huttle was armed during the encounter, but no further details about the struggle or the reason for his arrest have been released.

Matthew Huttle had been involved in the Capitol riots alongside his uncle, Dale Huttle, of Crown Point. Both men were arrested after the events, and Matthew was tracked down in Boise, Idaho. The FBI reported that Huttle spent approximately 10 minutes inside the Capitol building but remained on the grounds for several hours.

Despite facing legal consequences, both Matthew and Dale Huttle were later pardoned by President Trump. Matthew was sentenced to six months in federal prison, which he completed by July 2024, followed by 12 months of supervised release. The Huttles, like many others involved in the January 6 events, were granted pardons, sparking criticism from figures such as U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham, who argued that pardoning individuals who attacked law enforcement sent a negative message to the public.

Huttle's death follows a similar pattern of trouble for pardoned rioters. Last week, another Florida man who participated in the Capitol riots was arrested on federal gun charges just one day after receiving a pardon.

Indiana State Police are now investigating the shooting, and the deputy involved has been placed on administrative leave as part of standard procedure.
