Former U.S. Senator Bob Menendez Sentenced to 11 Years in Prison for Bribery and Acting as Egypt’s Agent

Former U.S. Senator Bob Menendez was sentenced on Wednesday to 11 years in prison after being convicted of accepting bribes, including gold bars and cash, and acting as an agent for Egypt. The Democratic senator, once a prominent figure in Washington, faced these charges after his involvement in a bribery scheme was uncovered. His own attorney humorously noted that the senator had earned the nickname "Gold Bar Bob" due to the nature of the bribes.

U.S. District Judge Sidney H. Stein delivered the sentence after Menendez tearfully addressed the court, expressing that he had lost everything that mattered to him except for his family. The judge remarked on Menendez’s rise to power and his subsequent fall, telling him, "Somewhere along the way, you lost your way, and working for the public good became working for your good."

The judge further emphasized how Menendez's actions contributed to the public's cynicism toward politicians, noting that the result of his crimes was the loss of his Senate seat, chairmanship, and reputation.

Menendez, 71, showed defiance outside the court, stating to reporters, "I am innocent." He also criticized the judicial system, aligning himself with former President Donald Trump’s views on corruption within the New York City legal system, calling the process politically motivated and corrupt.

Prosecutors had sought a 15-year prison term for Menendez, who was convicted of several charges related to his actions as a political figure selling his influence in exchange for substantial bribes. Menendez’s defense team had hoped for a sentence of less than two years, citing his long history of public service and personal sacrifices.

In 2015, Menendez had previously faced similar charges but was not convicted after a jury could not reach a unanimous verdict. Federal prosecutors dropped the case at that time.

At his sentencing, Menendez again broke down as he discussed his career and past accomplishments, asking the judge to consider the good he had done throughout his life. His attorney requested the court to acknowledge his "lifetime of extraordinary public service."

In connection with the case, two men convicted of bribing Menendez were also sentenced: Fred Daibes, a real estate developer, received seven years, while Wael Hana, an entrepreneur, was given eight years. Both men had provided testimony against Menendez.

The bribery scheme revolved around Menendez’s relationship with Egyptian officials and his efforts to protect the interests of businessmen who had showered him with expensive gifts. The FBI found nearly half a million dollars in cash, along with gold bars, during a raid of Menendez’s home in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey. These bribes included Menendez assisting in Egypt’s efforts to lift restrictions on military aid and influence U.S. foreign policy.
