Rockets Defeat Celtics 114-112 Behind Stellar Performances from Brooks and Thompson
The Houston Rockets emerged victorious over the Boston Celtics on Monday night, winning 114-112, thanks to standout performances from Amen Thompson and Dillon Brooks.
Houston entered the matchup against the second-seeded Celtics with momentum after securing back-to-back victories over the Cleveland Cavaliers, who held the best record in the NBA. Right from the start, forward Amen Thompson made his presence felt, contributing across the board with rebounds and fast-break opportunities.
Thompson wasn’t alone in his efforts, as Dillon Brooks also got off to a hot start, hitting four three-pointers in the first quarter to give the Rockets a four-point lead over Boston.
The second quarter continued in a similar fashion, with Thompson and Brooks applying constant pressure on the Celtics' defense with their sharp shooting. Houston also stepped up defensively, limiting star forward Jayson Tatum, who was held scoreless in the first half. Despite Tatum's struggles, the Rockets' lead remained slim, just two points at halftime.
The third quarter turned into an offensive battle, with Tatum scoring 15 points alone. However, Brooks and Thompson kept the Rockets in the game, and they trailed by only four heading into the final quarter.
Boston began the fourth quarter with a quick 7-0 run, but the Rockets responded. Jalen Green, who had briefly exited the game after suffering an eye injury in the first half, started hitting crucial jump shots. Houston's defense picked up again, and a 13-0 run put them ahead by one point with about five minutes remaining.
The game remained tight as both teams exchanged baskets in the closing moments. With five seconds left, the Rockets had possession, and veteran guard Fred VanVleet inbounded the ball to Thompson. Thompson drove to the basket and hit a clutch one-legged floater to seal the win for Houston.
Thompson and Brooks were the driving forces behind the victory. Thompson finished with a career-high 33 points and 10 rebounds, while Brooks contributed 36 points, including a franchise-record 10 three-pointers.
The Rockets will look to carry this momentum into their next game on Tuesday when they face the Atlanta Hawks.
