New Non-Opioid Painkiller Approved by U.S. Health Authorities
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved a new non-opioid painkiller designed to treat short-term pain in adults. The drug, suzetrigine, marketed under the brand name Journavx, works by blocking pain signals before they reach the brain.
Developed by Vertex Pharmaceuticals, Journavx provides relief from moderate to severe pain without the addictive risks associated with opioids. This approval comes amid ongoing efforts to combat the opioid addiction crisis that has plagued the U.S. for years. In 2017, President Trump declared the opioid epidemic a "national shame" and a public health emergency.
Clinical trials showed that Journavx was effective in reducing pain following surgery. The FDA hailed its approval as a significant advancement in managing acute pain. The drug is seen as an important milestone in addressing the opioid crisis, which claims tens of thousands of lives annually. In 2022, there were 82,000 opioid-involved overdose deaths, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
While opioids work by stimulating receptors in the brain to block pain signals, they also trigger the release of dopamine, leading to feelings of euphoria and increased risk of addiction. Vertex estimates that nearly 10% of patients who are initially treated with opioids for acute pain will continue using them long-term.
Journavx, however, works differently, blocking pain signals before they reach the brain. This marks the first approval of a new class of pain medication in over two decades. Vertex's CEO, Reshma Kewalramani, called the approval a historic achievement for the 80 million Americans prescribed pain medications for moderate to severe acute pain annually.
The cost of Journavx will be $15.50 per capsule, although it is not yet known whether the drug is safe and effective for children.
