Macron Intervenes, Fact-Checks Trump on Ukraine Aid: "No, We Paid"

During a joint media briefing at the White House, French President Emmanuel Macron directly interrupted U.S. President Donald Trump to correct a claim about Europe's financial support to Ukraine.

Trump, responding to a question on European funding for Ukraine, suggested that Europe was merely "loaning" money to Ukraine, implying the funds would eventually be repaid. He further hinted that a deal for Ukraine's critical mineral resources could be part of the arrangement in exchange for security support.

In response, Macron grabbed Trump’s arm to interject, stating that Europe’s contribution was not a loan and would not be repaid. Instead, any future compensation would come from "frozen Russian assets."

Macron clarified, "No, in fact, to be frank, we paid. We paid 60% of the total effort. It was like the US: loans, guarantees, grants." Trump, visibly unimpressed, smirked as Macron spoke and dismissively shook his hand as he made his point.

The exchange highlighted the stark differences in the U.S. and Europe's approaches to the Russia-Ukraine war. Macron's emphasis on Russia as the "aggressor" contrasted with Trump's reluctance to label Russian President Vladimir Putin as a "dictator," a term Macron readily applied to him.

The meeting between the two leaders unfolded against the backdrop of the U.S. voting against a United Nations resolution condemning Russia’s actions and supporting Ukraine’s territorial integrity.
